In this post we list off popular ways to find a share house, housemate or flatmate in Australia. We'll cover off resources such as Facebook groups, as well as the wide-spread platforms.

There are a number of reasons why you might be looking for a share house. Maybe you're new to the city and want to live with others who can show you around. Maybe you're tired of living alone and prefer social interaction. Or maybe you just want to save some money on rent.

Platforms vs. Facebook Groups#

There are two good ways of finding what you’re looking for. There are

  • Platforms (like Gumtree, Sharehouse, and Flatmates),
  • Then there are Online Groups (notably Facebook)

The platforms are good if you want to take advantage of advanced features like searching by area code, or filtering by price. You might find some of these platforms are overwhelmed by dodgy listings (namely Gumtree). Facebook groups can be helpful if you want to research who you'll be living with (AKA having Facebook stalk). Similar to Gumtree, a lot of these are rife with spam or lack any moderation. Fortunately, we'll offer you some good alternatives and personal recommendations.

Platforms#

Sharehouse (sharehouse.app)#

Sharehouse is a new player in this space, you're browsing our site right now. It's completely free! You'll enjoy an easy-to use listing platform with no hidden fees or contracts. By listing with us you support an Aussie team and help to grow the platform.

Sharehouse has powerful map search functionality, more than 7k+ monthly unique visitors, and thousands of listings across every state.

Gumtree (gumtree.com.au)#

Straight up, we don't recommend Gumtree πŸ‘Ž You might get lucky, but from our experience good listings are few and far between. Gumtree is a great website if you're looking for a lawnmower. Not as good for a sharehouse.

Flatmates (flatmates.com.au)#

Flatmates is one of the longest-running platforms for finding flatmates and sharehouses in Australia. Browsing is free, expect to pay for premium features (usually needed to find a match). They have a large database of listings, and offer filters to help narrow your search.

Flatmatefinders (flatmatefinders.com.au)#

Flatmatefinders has been around for a long time. It's less popular than Flatmates but offers unique features like in-app calling. Browsing and receiving messages is free, sending and calling requires payment.

Facebook Groups#

The groups listed below are ones we have examined, or know to be of high quality. There are Facebook groups in each city, so it's worth having a search if the ones listed below don't meet your search criteria. If you have suggestions for other Australian cities, please get in touch and we will update this post! (shoutout Tazzie, Canberra, Broome)

Facebook Marketplace#

This is also a fair option. From our experience good listings are uncommon and usually found in a sea of spam. Marketplace lacks moderation, but it might be worth an occasional scroll.

Facebook is also notorious for scamming so be sure to read our blog on the 5 Most Common Scams On Facebook.

Wrapping up#

We hope you've found this helpful. If you're looking for housemates, or your next house, be sure to create a listing with us. It's completely free! If you have any questions, please get in touch.
